The Camino Francés is one of the many routes within the Camino de Santiago, and we absolutely loved it when we did it. The complete route can be completed in approximately 33 stages (764 km). However, we chose to cover only a portion of the journey, the minimum required to receive the Compostela (at least the final 100 km of the route).

Sarria

Our chosen route was from Sarria to Santiago, covering approximately 113 km. We divided the route into 5 days as follows:

  • Day 1 - Sarria to Portomarín (22 km)
  • Day 2 - Portomarín to Palas de Rei (24 km)
  • Day 3 - Palas de Rei to Arzúa (29 km)
  • Day 4 - Arzúa to Pedrouzo (19 km)
  • Day 5 - Pedrouzo to Santiago (19 km)

In the upcoming articles, we will provide a day-by-day account of our journey, including details of where we stayed.

Recommendations for Completing the Camino de Santiago

  • We recommend booking accommodations in advance. While it's possible to arrive in towns and book on the spot, we preferred not to take chances.
  • Upon arriving in Santiago and to qualify for the Compostela, it's essential to prove that you completed the journey. You'll need a pilgrim's credential, which you can obtain on the first day of the journey, and it should be stamped at least twice in each town. We often stamped it more than twice, getting stamps at every bar, hostel, store, and church we came across.
  • If you plan to cycle the route, you must cover a minimum of 200 km, whereas walking requires at least 100 km.
  • To receive the Compostela, visit the Pilgrim's Office in Santiago:

Address: Rúa Carretas, nº33 15705, Santiago de Compostela A Coruña – ESPAÑA Phone: +34 981 568 846 E-mail: oficinadelperegrino@catedraldesantiago.es

  • Before arriving in Santiago, it's important to fill out the following form to obtain a QR code, which you'll need to present at the Pilgrim's Office.
  • If you prefer not to carry your backpack during the journey, you can hire a Correos service to pick up and deliver your backpack to each hostel where you stay.
