Don't miss the opportunity to explore the city like a local with this complete tutorial on getting around Budapest using public transportation.

Public Transportation in Budapest

Budapest boasts an excellent and affordable public transportation system. The city features buses, trams, and an extensive metro network covering most areas. The metro system, with its four lines connecting key parts of the city, is particularly useful for quick citywide travel. Buses and trams also offer scenic routes for city exploration compared to the metro.

There are several ways to purchase public transportation tickets in Budapest:

Are you tired of paying bank commissions for currency exchange?
We present the perfect cards for you. Forget about annoying hidden fees when using different currencies than HUF:

You can buy single tickets from ticket vending machines at metro, bus, and tram stations. Discounts are available for students, seniors, and people with disabilities. You can purchase daily, weekly, or monthly passes. Consider the Budapest Card, offering unlimited public transportation access and discounts on tourist attractions and other services. You can buy tickets through the BudapestGo app.

We opted for daily passes since we walked most of the time. There were days when we regretted not getting the 72-hour pass, but in the end, we enjoyed our travels just the same.

From the app, you can also purchase airport tickets. Here's how to get from the Budapest Airport to the city center using public transportation.

Tips for Using Public Transportation in Budapest

  • It's important to validate your tickets before boarding buses, trams, or the metro. You can validate your tickets at the validation machines located at the entry gates. If you bought tickets with the BudapestGo app, go to the "My Tickets" section and scan the QR code at the entrance of each mode of transportation.
  • In both buses and trams, the QR code is on the door, so have your phone ready to scan it quickly. However, on buses, if you enter through the front door, the QR code is right where the driver is.
  • Make sure to keep your tickets as they may be checked by inspectors.
  • Public transportation tickets are valid for one-way travel. If you need to transfer, you'll need to purchase a new ticket.
  • Public transportation tickets are not valid on suburban trains (HÉV).
  • Don't forget to scan your ticket, as there are many undercover inspectors who check tickets when you least expect it (we saw tourists fined for not scanning the QR code on the bus).

Taxis in Budapest

Taxis are a popular transportation option in Budapest, especially for those who want to travel quickly or in groups. Taxis can be hailed on the street, or you can use a transportation app like Bolt or Uber to request one. Taxi fares in Budapest are generally reasonable, but be sure to agree on a price with the driver before getting in to avoid surprises. We didn't use taxis at any point as public transportation works quite well, but it's a reasonable option.

Bike Rentals

Bike rentals are an excellent choice for those who want to explore the city while getting some exercise. Budapest has a bike-sharing system called Bubi with bike stations throughout the city. You can download their app for more information.

Walking in Budapest

Lastly, our favorite option when visiting a new city is walking. The city is quite compact, and many major points of interest and attractions are within walking distance of each other. Walking is an excellent way to get to know the city and discover its hidden gems. Plus, it's free!
