How to Get from the Port of Civitavecchia to Rome?

If your cruise ship makes a stop in Civitavecchia, you can easily and economically reach Rome following this guide. You have several options:

Booking a Tour with the Ship Most ships offer excursions to Rome, either guided tours or self-guided. However, these options tend to be very expensive. Last time I checked the prices, a self-guided visit to Rome cost €70 per person, which includes a bus to leave the cruise terminal, plus the train to Rome. If you want peace of mind and want the ship to take care of organizing your visit, this is your option.

Taking the Train to Rome This is the option I always take because it's economical (€4.60 per person per trip). Not bad, right? Now the question is, how do you get to the train terminal in Civitavecchia. You have two options:

One is to take the port bus that takes you to the terminal for €6 per person, with a journey of approximately 10-15 minutes. The bus stop is just outside the ship. Keep in mind that there isn't much organization when it comes to taking this bus, so boarding the bus can be a bit chaotic. Bring cash, as they don't accept cards and only small bills.

The other option is to walk to the terminal, which will take about 20 minutes, and for me, it's the most convenient option. You don't have to wait for the bus, whose schedules are not very clear, wasting valuable time to explore Rome. To exit, simply follow the signs and signals, and you'll manage to leave the port.

Once at the terminal, head to the Trenitalia ticket offices to buy your tickets. You can reach either Rome Termini or Rome S. Pietro (near the Vatican). It's best to buy only one-way tickets so you're not tied to a specific return time (just make sure to return to the ship on time). The journey takes approximately 50 minutes.

To check train schedules, you can visit the Trenitalia website.
